Government Documents

The University Library is a selective depository for United States federal and California state government publications. The Library was designated both a federal and California state depository in 1965. The collection focuses on statistical information and subjects in the social sciences and sciences, such as geology, history, health, and the environment. Free public access is provided for government information received through the depository programs.

A reference librarian can assist you in the use of specialized indexes and Internet sources; help you find specific governmental statistical or congressional information; or determine the location of a government publication.

Government documents are housed in a separate area just behind the Reference Desk and are arranged by the Superintendent of Documents classification scheme (SuDocs). This classification system is designed to group together publications by the same government author. Within an agency or department, publications are grouped according to the subordinate organization. You can learn more about the SuDocs classification system online at http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fdlp/pubs/explain.html.
