New Library Catalog

For the start of Spring Term, 2008, the University Library has a new Library Catalog, part of the implementation of an updated Integrated Library System.

Some of the features of the new catalog include:

  • Enhanced search capabilities, including powerful keyword and field searching, as well as limiting to specific locations, collections, and material types.
  • Easy access for current students, faculty and staff to their own library account, including a list of all University Library materials an individual has currently checked out.
  • Easier to read lists of library holdings, including the availability of individual books, volumes, and journal issues.
  • Clearly displayed links to materials in the library's online collections, including thousands of electronic journals and books.

New Integrated Library System

The updated Library Catalog is part of a new Integrated Library System (ILS). The ILS is essential to the University Library's work, providing key processing and management services for staff as well as public access to the library's holdings. The previous ILS, known as GEAC Advance, will be retired as the library implements Millennium, a more robust system from Innovative Interfaces. A majority of other California State University Libraries have made a similar transition over the last few years.

Key functionality of the ILS includes:

  • Online Public Access to the Library Catalog - allows library users to search the holdings of the University Library (including books, CDs, periodicals, theses, videos, etc.).
  • Personal Online Accounts - allows students, faculty and staff to track and renew the materials borrowed from the library.
  • Circulation - manages the check-out and check-in process, as well as tracking overdue materials and fines.
  • Cataloging - enables library staff to add and maintain accurate records of the library's holdings according to national and international standards.
  • Acquisitions - allows the library to order, receive, process, and pay for new books and other materials.
  • Serials - allows the library to track new issues of journals and other periodical subscriptions.
  • Patron database - enables the library to maintain accurate lists of currently enrolled students, faculty and staff, allowing the library to check-out materials as well as the provide online access to the library's electronic collections.
